Carcassonne – Black Tower

BLACK TOWER
A
Carcassonne Central
mini-expansion by Jonathan Warren
The construction of a tower in the province of Carcassonne was a greatly feared sight.
Watchmen would scout over the land for would-be invaders and take them prisoner.
Although some aggressors thought they were safe from the watchmen’s ever prying eyes,
recently new towers have been erected allowing the watchmen a different perspective of
the land, causing some towers to be abandoned altogether, in favour of these new edifices.

ULES
Other than the following changes and additions, the rules to
The Tower
remain basically the same.
Preparation
At the beginning of the game each player receives a number of Black, White and normal
Tower pieces, according to the
total number of players.
,
•
two players:
4 Black Tower pieces, 2 White Tower pieces, 8 normal Tower pieces
•
three players:
3 Black Tower pieces, 2 White Tower pieces, 7 normal Tower pieces
•
four players:
3 Black Tower pieces, 1 White Tower piece, 6 normal Tower pieces
•
five players:
2 Black Tower pieces, 1 White Tower piece, 5 normal Tower pieces
•
six players:
2 Black Tower pieces, 1 White Tower piece, 4 normal Tower pieces
1
In this expansion the term ‘normal Tower piece’ refers to a Tower piece that is included as part of
The Tower
large expansion.
2
This Tower piece distribution list replaces the distribution list given in
The Tower
rules.
3
When playing with
more
tower foundation tiles other than the standard 18, increase the Tower piece distribution. For every 4 extra tower foundation tiles
each player receives: 1 Black Tower piece and 2 normal Tower pieces.
If 8 or more extra tower foundation tiles are being used, each player in a 4, 5 or 6 player game receives: 1 White Tower piece. The quantity of White Tower
pieces per player in
any
game must not exceed 2 pieces each.

Place a Black Tower piece
After placing a tile, a player may now place a Black Tower piece to any tile with a tower foundation or on a tower which is
already under construction, unless a follower guards the top. The Tower already under construction can be either a normal
or a Black Tower, but not a White Tower. When a Black Tower piece is the
uppermost
piece of a tower, the tower
becomes a Black Tower. There is no limit to the height of a Black Tower. A Black Tower’s range is the amount of storeys that
makes it up, regardless of how many normal and Black Tower pieces it consists of.
To finish the construction of a Black Tower, a follower can be deployed to the top of it in the usual way.
A Black tower is used in the same way as a normal Tower, but captures followers along the
diagonals
. A Black Tower
cannot
capture followers horizontally or vertically.
Restoring a Black Tower to a normal Tower
Adding a normal Tower piece to the top of a Black Tower restores it back to a normal Tower with normal Tower properties
(i.e. it captures horizontally or vertically, not diagonally).
It is the uppermost Tower piece that designates the type of Tower
in play. There is no limit to the height of a normal Tower. A normal Tower’s range is the amount of storeys that makes it up,
regardless of how many Black and normal Tower pieces it consists of.
Place a White Tower piece
After placing a tile, a player may now place a White Tower piece to any tower which is
already
under construction, unless a
follower guards the top. When a White Tower piece is placed the tower is ‘capped’. A tower that has been capped becomes a
White Tower and
cannot
be built any higher and has no power to capture followers. A follower
cannot
be deployed to the
top of a White Tower.
Examples of Tower types
Here are some examples of different types of Tower. Normal and Black Towers can be built higher and followers deployed at
the top also. White Towers cannot be built higher and cannot have a follower deployed at the top. Notice that it is the
uppermost
piece of the Tower that designates the type of Tower in play:
3 storey normal Tower
4 storey Black Tower
5 storey normal Tower
6 storey Black Tower
6 storey White Tower
7 storey White Tower

Question:
Can I then place a Black Tower piece to change it back yet again?
Answer:
Yes. A Tower can be changed back and forth as many times as a player likes, as long as he has the required Tower pieces in their supply, until a
White Tower piece caps the Tower.

Examples of Tower ranges
Let us assume that this is the layout of the board so far:
A player might choose to play a normal Tower piece to the existing foundation:
The range of the newly placed Tower is:
The Green Farmer is at risk of capture from this Tower placement
A player might instead choose to play a Black Tower piece to the existing foundation:
Carcassonne – Black Tower
4
The range of the newly placed Black Tower is:
Now, the Blue Knight is at risk of capture from the Black tower but the Green farmer is now safe from capture as Black Towers
cannot
capture horizontally or vertically.
If a normal Tower is built 2 storeys high, then its range would be:
The Green Farmer and the Yellow Monk is at risk of capture from the Tower.
If a Black Tower is built 2 storeys high, or if a normal Tower (1 storey high) is capped with a Black Tower piece (making it a
Black Tower, 2 storeys high), then its range would be:
The Blue Knight and the Red Knight are at risk of capture from the Black Tower. The Green pig is safe as Pigs, Builders and Barns
cannot
be captured by a Tower (of either kind).
Notice that the Red Knight can be captured, because it is possible for a Black Tower to capture over ‘holes’.
When a normal or Black Tower is capped with a White Tower piece (you
cannot
play a White Tower piece directly to a tower
foundation), the Tower becomes a White Tower. A White Tower has no capturing properties at all. It cannot be changed back to a normal
Tower or a Black Tower under any circumstances. Should a normal or Black tower become a White Tower then it would not have any
control of the area:
All pieces in the White Tower’s vicinity are safe from capture.
