COOL, CREATIVE AND CONTEMPORARY
for our own purposes. We are
describing our world view, we
are explaining ourselves to
ourselves. These images serve as
memories or reminders, they
make a statement or project a
feeling or mood. They are a way
of ordering our lives.
Of course this is true of other
creative (sorry) fields – music,
painting, writing – which are all
driven by the same impulse.
They hold the same individual
preoccupations and the same
potential for reward. For some,
they are also a means of earning
a living, for others they are the
driving force of their inner life.
One way or another, the need
to be creative, or inventive, or to
originate, is a powerful one that
derives its source from our psyche
and demands considerable
technical ability and skill to be
carried out to a satisfactory
conclusion. But that satisfactory
conclusion can bring with
it enormous pleasure
and gratification.
This whole subject started up
quite a discussion in the
Black+White offices and deputy
editor Mark Bentley, who is
known for his profound
statements came up with: ‘It’s
humanity at its best,’ which we
felt put it very neatly in a nutshell.
Having come up with a number of
similar meaningful statements
over the years, Mark now has his
own wall on which we write them
up – a gentle reminder in our
working life of what it’s all about.
If you have any thoughts or
ideas (or meaningful statements)
about this subject write to our
new In Contact page (p83) on
paper, Facebook or email – we’d
love to hear from you.
EDITOR’S
LETTER
S
omeone asked me
recently what I was doing
photographically.
I mentioned a few things
– I was doing some portraits,
taking pictures of horses, starting
a new project. Then they asked
me why I take pictures. The
question threw me off balance –
why do I? I don’t earn my living by
photography and there is no other
pressure for me to do so.
So what does drive me? The
word ‘creativity’ is so overused
© Tim Clinch
and mis-abused that I want to
avoid it so I hunted around in the
thesaurus for some alternatives
– invent, originate, fictionalise…
Somewhere in there is the seed
of an idea. When we take pictures
that aren’t commissioned or in
some way destined for a purpose,
we’re creating (sorry about the
word) a story, re-inventing reality

Quote of the month
…comes from an ongoing contributor who reminded us
about the fundamentals of rocky relationships: ‘Here are
some of the Valencia images, shot weekend before last.
Who says a romantic weekend away and photography
can’t mix? Oh yeah, my ex!’

WRONG DECISIVE MOMENT
Sometimes you can be in the right place at the
right time, but still don’t get the right picture.
While watching his son play football in
the driving rain, deputy editor Mark Bentley
tried to get a picture of someone holding a

umbrella. After wrestling
with his own umbrella in one hand and his
smartphone in the other, he finally managed
to get the picture – only to miss his son
scoring a goal…

GIFT TO V&A MUSEUM OF CHILDHOOD
Here at Black+White we were delighted to hear recently that
one of our favourite and most loyal readers, John Heywood,
has had 158 black & white prints accepted by the Victoria &
Albert Museum of Childhood. John started photographing
children back in 1965 when he was just 16 years of age. The
museum says: ‘His work provides a significant and enduring
visual record of British childhood in the twentieth century…
and will provide an important resource for current and
future generations.’ Well done John.
COPY ERROR
A slap on B+W’s wrist this month when we
called Tim Clinch’s beloved new country
of residence The Ukraine, rather than
Ukraine, in the November issue (
B+W
156)
of Fortnight at F/8. As Tim rightly pointed
out, we don’t say The Spain, or The France
do we? We’re sorry Tim for our blunder!
