HOW TO SUBMIT
O
k, it’s time for New
We look at six of the best
jackets for photographers
Year’s Resolutions,
which I just happen
to be terribly good at.
I make loads every year. So,
as ever, I’ve been giving the
matter some thought and I keep
returning to the same thing –
that to live as much as possible
‘in the moment’ is a really great
thing to do. Just think, if you
walk down the street with your
head full of thoughts about the
future or the past, you don’t see
what’s right in front of you –
a face, a cloud break, rain falling
in a puddle. So you wouldn’t see
the potential for a photograph
and you wouldn’t take it.
Last August, I was having
a really busy day in the office
when a contributor emailed me
to remind me that it was World
Photography Day and that I
should go out, take a picture and
upload it onto the World Photo
site. How could I resist? I grabbed
my camera and flew home (which
is close by) for lunch, and found
Toby, the carpenter, building
bookshelves. He was my first
portrait of the day. On my way
back to work I called by a local
shop and, in passing, asked the
young woman behind the counter
if I could take a picture of her.
These two portraits are now
among my favourites – so was it
that I was extra aware that day,
because I was ‘in the moment’
and actively looking for pictures
or was it just a lucky day? You tell
me. But it’s worth trying.
