Welcome to
BLACK WHITE
PHOTOGRAPHY
I
’ve been talking a lot lately, to anyone
essentials of modern photography. Of
course I understand this, but I still think
it’s a shame that we are quickly becoming
screen-viewers of photography when the
pleasures of the print are so great.
Remember the satisfaction of making a
print, getting it framed and hanging it on
a wall? Or the delight of giving a favourite
print to a friend, or simply making an
edited selection to be stored in a portfolio
or box. And to be given a print by a fellow
photographer is a real honour.
Of course printing is an art, whether
you go down the silver or the digital route
(people do forget this) – there are skills
to be learnt and your individual style to
develop. And it takes time, patience and
money. But it’s worth it.
I think I’ve managed to persuade a few
photographers to at least think about
printing again – and I have a hunch that
they might even be quite excited by the
idea. In the coming months we will be
running features on the art of printing,
and I hope they will inspire you to join us.
You could re-discover a whole new world
of photography…
who will listen, about printing. I’m
convinced that it’s becoming a dying
art and I want to save it. There’s nothing
in the world like holding a photographic
print in your hand.
You might well argue that there are
plenty of fantastic devices for showing
your work, from the big screen to the
tablet or smartphone. In fact, you might
add that very few professionals would
dream of having a printed portfolio
(except for fine art work) because the
industry demands instant access.
