Welcome to
BLACK WHITE
PHOTOGRAPHY
O
n the wall at the side of my
desk is pinned a small
sheet of paper with the
following words on: ‘When
you walk, just walk, when
you sit, just sit; above all
don’t wobble.’ That little piece of paper has
followed me around from desk to desk over
the years and when my head’s buzzing and
I’m attempting to do 53 things at once, and
failing, I read it, stop, and start focusing on
one thing at once, giving it my full attention.
The results, of course, are a whole lot better.
It’s one thing that I’ve always loved about
photography, its demand for total
concentration. But just lately I’ve noticed
that there are times when I don’t give
photography that total attention – I’m only
half there with it. The results are OK, but
they don’t excite me. If I compare them to
the results I get when I am full committed,
the difference is clear. For me, this generally
means when my camera is on a tripod, but
I’m beginning to think that I need to
approach all photography, even when using
my smartphone, in the same way.
Maybe photography has become so easy
that we no longer need to give it our full
attention. We no longer need to understand
exposure or focus or depth of field because
the camera can do it for us. In some ways,
that’s amazing, but in others, is it what we
want? Don’t we want to claim back that
control, to be creatively involved with it?
Maybe we need to go back to that
commitment to taking a photograph that
was once demanded of us – I don’t mean
we should all buy large format cameras and
lug them around with us, but maybe when
we’re using our wonderfully clever cameras
we should give the process the same
attention that we would if we were shooting
large format. In the days of film each shot
cost money – and there was no better way
of concentrating the mind on not wasting
a shot. So, when you take a photograph, just
take a photograph…
