Black & White Photography 2013-08, 2013

morning, I woke fit and well.
We started at 8.30am. The
hairdresser was doing
complicated things to her hair,
the dog was sheltering under a
chair, wearing his ‘wedding
jacket’, the children were glued
to a computer screen playing an
unfathomable game which kept
them remarkably quiet, the
parents were opening the gin
and the husband-to-be laughed
nervously in the background.
I was sincerely terrified.
Having checked and double
checked that the lens cap was
off (I use a rangefinder) I started
shooting, tripping over the dog,
getting tangled up with the
hairdresser and foolishly turning
down drinks offered by the
parents. But, once I’d established
that my battery wasn’t flat, that
I could remember how to set
correct exposure and that I did
have spare memory cards,
I started…enjoying myself.
At the end of the day I
staggered home, downloaded
into Lightroom and checked out
what I had got. Phew! I had
enough for my friend to be
pleased with. I spent the next
couple of days working on the
images and making a slideshow
with music.
But now we come to the point
I want to make. I am NOT and
never will be a wedding
photographer. I stand in awe at
the skill, professionalism and
sheer organisation that goes into
such a job. The stress of it must
be awful. So, instead, I can earn
my living as a journalist, and
I can get great satisfaction (and
fun) from the photography I do
outside of work. That much
maligned word ‘amateur’ comes
into its true meaning – from the
Old French ‘lover of ’ – long live
the amateur, and may we
continue to love photography.
EDITOR’S
LETTER
A
bout six months
ago a friend
announced that
she was getting
married and
invited me to the
wedding. ‘You will bring your
camera, won’t you?’ she asked.
‘No!’ I shrieked before I could
stop myself. ‘I’m not a wedding
photographer, it’s a very
specialised art, I couldn’t
possibly…’ But the look on her
face and her muttered: ‘We can’t
afford a proper one,’ did it. ‘OK,’
I said, just slightly sullenly.

So, by last weekend I’d
wound myself up into a frenzy
of misgiving and nervous
apprehension, wishing a bus
would hit me, not terribly
hard but enough to spend
a few days in hospital, thus
missing the event. But I suppose
the bus drivers around these
parts are over conscientious
because, come Saturday

PRETTY AS A PICTURE
BLACK+WHITE SPY
In our June issue’s Editor’s Letter, Elizabeth sung
the praises of the humble postcard as a means of
sharing your images and it seems that plenty of
you feel the same way. We’ve been inspired and
amazed by the wonderful postcards received in
response. Massive thanks from the B+W team
for brightening our mornings.
Always on the lookout for new talent, our B+W spy spotted a
promising piece of black & white film photography at Brighton
University’s recent graduate show. An imaginative use of space and
a charming concept was enough to win us over and we are excited
to see what comes next for Miranda Hayes.
Congratulations to Adrian
Ensor, who has had two
photographs accepted
in the Royal Academy
Summer show.

Hiroshi Sugimoto, plus pictures
by Wolfgang Tillmans, Sergio
Larrain, Guy Bourdin and
