It’s good to seewhat young people are doing in photographyand it’s very interesting to see how they arebeing taught – which is evident in the results.Sometimes I see a student’s work that staysEDITOR’Swith me long after the show has closed. There is perhapsLETTERsomething about the work that has drawn me to it and I’vemaybe seen an element of potential that I think is interesting.AUGUSTI sometimes take notes and look up the work online.2016But it was last year that I saw an exhibit that stillmakes me think.I say that I saw the work but in fact I didn’t. Let meexplain. I was at Brighton University end of year show andI noticed a piece of work that looked intriguing. The student (whose name I regrettablydidn’t take note of) had acknowledged the fact that we live in a digital world by putting hiswork on a memory stick attached to a plinth. Visitors were invited to plug the stick intotheir phones to view his pictures. It seemed like a good and original idea. But I didn’t do it. Why? I’m not sure – laziness, not wanting to look at work on the smallscreen of my phone, being distracted by the images hanging on the surrounding walls?I don’t know. But I forgave myself, left it for others to engage with, and moved on.But it wouldn’t quite let me go. I felt curious. So I decided to do a little spying and seeif other people’s reaction was different to mine. I returned to the plinth and hungunobtrusively around and watched. Almost everyone walked up to the plinth and readthe invitation. Some picked up the memory stick and then replaced it. Not one personplugged it into their phone or tablet. Not one. What do I make of that? I can only assume that we are not so digitalised as we think weare. When given a simple choice of viewing photographic prints on a wall, or making theeffort to engage with a digital device, we might just take the first option. The photographicprint, it seems, is still holding its own and, I suspect, will do for some time. Let’s hope so.EB+W01POST YOUR ORDER TOElizabeth Roberts, Editorelizabethr@thegmcgroup.comThe Subscription DepartmentGMC Publications Ltd, 166 High Street,Lewes,East Sussex, BN7 1XU, UKTel +44(0) 1273 488005,Fax: +44(0) 1273 402866or visit www.thegmcgroup.comBlack+ White Photography (ISSN 1473-2467) is publishedevery four weeks by GMC Publications LtdBlack+White Photography will consider articles for publication, which should be sent to the editor together with a stamped self-addressed return envelope.
