YouTube
project in mind, especially with
someone I’ve known all my life.
And it started me thinking
about other collaborative work
I’ve been involved in, from
workshops to books and lots in
between. I love working with
other people, be it one-to-one or
in larger collaborations – sparking
ideas off, establishing new ways of
seeing, drawing on each person’s
strengths and experiences – to
create something which could not
have been created in isolation.
Of course you need to work
alone most of the time, to find
your own identity and go in your
own direction – but to come out
of it now and then can be
unexpectedly productive.
When I look back at the people
I’ve worked with I remember two
things – the outcome, which has
generally been really rewarding,
and the sheer fun of it. Exciting,
entertaining and uplifting – and
quite often a great learning
experience. But, however serious
the project, there’s always been a
bit of laughter involved. We
sometimes forget that creativity
has a large element of play in it.
And play is fun.
Here in the office, some of our
best ideas come from times when
we allow ourselves to forget for a
moment the pressing deadline or
the emails piling up, and let
ourselves indulge in some playful
discussion or banter – it
frequently opens doors to ideas
that would otherwise have
remained shut.
So, for the next few months I’m
hoping to have some fun, and
who knows, maybe something
interesting will come out of it…

recently, being a bit fed up with

her postcards with my images on.
In return she’s been sending me
poems (she’s a talented writer). It
just seemed a fun thing to do. But

last week she contacted me to say
that an online publisher had seen
both her writing and my website

on a project. After all the years
we’ve spent apart it feels like a
really good thing to do together.
I’m not sure where it’s going yet,
but it’s exciting to have a new

We recently heard that 600 million pictures
are taken every week in the UK alone, which
gives a world count of…no, don’t think about it.
Instead, slow down and think before you shoot.

We were delighted when we saw Eleanor
Macnair’s new blog, where she reproduces
iconic photographs in Play-doh. Images by
Bill Brandt, Clare Strand and Sarah Moon
have all been transformed into colourful
and entertaining renditions – we’ve got our
favourite, what’s yours?
