Blood Moon by Nashstheory, A - D
Summary What really happened when Edward left Bella during New Moon? What if the wolves hadn't saved her from Laurent in the clearing? More importantly what if Victoria had plans for a fate worse than death for Bella? A dark AU on what could have been. This is a dark story with a mature rating. It involves drug usage, violence and sexuality. This is ultimately Edward and Bella but there are other characters as well. If any of this offends you click away now and don’t read it. Otherwise you’ve been warned so please don’t flame me about Edward and Bella not being together and happy from the very beginning or because the characters are doing something bad.Chapter 1. It had been three weeks. Three weeks of absolute torture; three weeks of agony; three weeks of a heart he thought was dead, aching uncontrollably. It had been three weeks since he’d left Bella. Edward wondered briefly how she was doing. Did she miss him? Was she angry? Had she started to move on? His chest began to ache harder from the thought of it. Was she seeing Mike Newton now? He wouldn’t blame her if she was; he had practically thrown her into Mike’s arms. Edward felt his hands tense at the idea of her with . . . his knuckles cracked loudly on their own accord, with Mike Newton. A horn blared and he looked up anxiously before jumping back onto the curb. The car that had almost hit him roared past and he let himself sink into his own thoughts again. The minds of the people surrounding him were a vague hum, meaningless noise that he ignored like he had the people of Forks. Edward knew the street he was looking for and turned one corner and then the next and found himself in a dimly lit part of LA. The homeless were bundling down in their tattered clothes, drunks were slumped in the doorways and the women lining the street were bored and tired looking. “Looking for a date handsome?” A blonde with too much makeup and red heels asked briskly as he hurried past her. “Please don’t want anything too weird,” her mind pleaded. “I just want to make enough to keep Tony happy and make my rent. And my ass is killing me from the fucker earlier with the electric cord.” He grimaced at the image in her thoughts. Reaching into the inner pocket of his coat, Edward grabbed a small wad of bills and pressed them into her hand, closing her fingers around them. “Not tonight beautiful,” he murmured and tried to sound gentlemanly. “Why don’t you get some rest?” He didn’t know how much he’d handed her but it was more than she’d likely make the rest of the night combined. The smile she returned was an honest one, even if he could see how tired she was from the way the edges drooped. His cell phone buzzed as he walked away from her and toward the alley at the end of the block, which was his destination. Reaching into his pants pocket for his phone, he saw the name on the screen. Alice. She’d seen what he was going to do. Of course, she’d known what he was planning as soon as he decided on it, which was why he’d purposely kept his thoughts random trying to prevent himself from making the decision that had been made when he stepped onto the flight from Austin to LA. Tracking Victoria had failed, leaving Bella was killing the remains of his immortal soul, what did it matter what happened to him now? He shoved the phone back into his pocket without answering. Alice knew where he was going and why. She’d keep his secret. After all, she’d been keeping Jasper’s for all this time. That was where he’d gotten the idea originally. Edward had known that sometimes Jasper split away from Alice on long hunting trips; hunting trips to cities where vampires shouldn’t roam. LA, Las Vegas, he’d seen them once in Miami. Alice would hide in the shadows and cower in the boutiques of expensive hotels, waiting for Jasper to return from his solo hunting trips. Edward could feel how miserable she was, how it hurt her that he couldn’t just stick to the lifestyle they had all embraced, how she second guessed herself and wondered if perhaps it wasn’t just the blood he was seeking but the company as well. Edward could also feel how utterly devoted she was to him regardless and how desperate she was to keep his secret. He knew how afraid she was that he would tell Carlisle, and even though he’d never given any signs of anger at Jasper’s weakness, she was afraid they’d find themselves without a home. He turned down the alley and nodded to the burly man leaning against a wrought iron stairway rail. One glance at him and the man nodded coolly, knowing Edward as one of his own kind. Edward tried to keep his disgust to a minimum and wondered if the other vampire was really there to act as a doorman to keep undesirables out or if in reality his job was to lure in those who may have lost their way and could provide the patrons of the establishment with some sport. He made his way slowly into the dark bar and pressed through the crowd of vampires. “Poison?” A bartender with brilliant ruby eyes asked suddenly. “Low on O negative tonight.” “You have anything animal?” “Animal?” He repeated and then laughed. “Must be a friend of that Jasper guy. Think I have some mountain lion around here somewhere, hold on.” The bartender wandered away and Edward let his eyes travel over the crowd. Heavy metal music blared and he could see the eyes of some of the bar’s patrons on him. Lusts of all kind seeped into his brain from the thoughts of others. Blood lust, sexual frustration, a general craving for something other than what was available, all of it echoed and pounded to the heavy beat of the drums. The bartender returned a few moments later with a glass filled with red liquid. “No mountain lion; did have leopard though.” He pushed the glass to Edward and nodded. “Thanks,” he reached for a bill to hand the man. “On the house,” the bartender shook his head and pushed Edward’s hand away from his. “That Jasper has come in handy a few times keeping the unruly ones under control.” “Really?” He raised his eyebrows and took a drink. It was bottled, not fresh, and the preservatives made the blood bitter. He grimaced and took another sip anyway. “I take it you’re not here for just a drink?” The bartender asked quietly and Edward followed his gaze to the back wall of the bar. He could see the cages in long rows, stacked two high, and the creatures hidden in the shadows within. The reason every vampire had come here tonight. The substitute he’d seen so clearly in Jasper’s mind time and again. Completely abhorrent to Carlisle’s way of thinking, worse than killing humans he’d once declared. Monstrous, barbaric, cruel, Carlisle had growled once when they’d come upon a caravan trading them 60 years earlier. ‘What did it matter?’ Edward thought to himself. He was a monster anyway. “How much?” He nodded toward the cages and tried to appear disinterested, like the question was merely idle speculation. “$500 for an hour, $5000 for the night,” the bartender replied. “They don’t fight unless it’s a special request on your part. But you pay for any damages once you’re done.” Edward reached into his jacket and pulled out another wad of bills. $5000 fell onto the bar before he could stop himself – it was a small price to pay for freedom. It was a chance to forget her for the night, to distract his mind from the pain of being without her for just a few hours. He didn’t think it would work but he wanted something to dull the need that filled all his senses. Another vampire, larger than Emmett and twice as scary looking in the darkness, came toward him at the bartender’s unsubtle head jerk. The bartender handed him a room pass card for upstairs and nodded toward the other man. “Follow Alexei, he’ll get you what you need.” “Right,” Edward agreed curtly and followed the larger vampire, trying to decode the empty banality of his Russian mind. He couldn’t care less about what he was doing, Edward realized quickly. All he was to him was an inconvenience, the images of the porn he’d been watching filtering into his mind. Edward tried not to flinch when he realized that it wasn’t random smut he’d found on the internet or pay per view but the security cameras to the various rooms. He shuddered; thankfully he hadn’t come here to indulge in those particular pleasures tonight. Edward glanced through the first row of cages, taking in the frightened stares and the even more frightened thoughts coming from the inhabitants in front of him. On the end he saw her, the heart shaped face, chestnut hair that would fall in silky waves if it were brushed, large doe eyes looking at him frightfully as she cowered, legs to her chest, in the back corner of her cage. She wasn’t who he wanted and he couldn’t even smell her blood, it was impossible for these creatures’ blood to have an aroma, but she was close. She was so very, very close that he could imagine it was her. He could imagine it was the very heroin he’d refused to let himself taste. “That one,” he pointed into the cage and watched as the brute next to him opened the metal door and then pulled her out by the leash secured to her neck. Giving Edward the handle of the leash, he grunted and pointed toward the steps before stomping away. Edward looked at the creature shivering next to him and felt his resolve weaken. “Are you all right?” He asked her quietly. When she shivered in response, he unwrapped his hand from around the leash and wrapped an arm around her waist. He could hear from her mind that she would be punished if he was displeased with her, made to suffer, so instead of requesting that they return her to her cage he lead her silently from the bar and up the stairs. The doors were identical, except for the numbers, and he assumed the rooms were as well; they weren’t meant for luxury or romance; they served a purpose, just like the cheap motels that the humans used for their sordid affairs. This was the vampire version of a cheap fuck and he hated himself for it. Pushing the pass card into the door lock, he heard a faint click and then shouldered his way into the room; nondescript; a small bathroom to one side with a sink and a shower, and a few dingy looking towels. The room itself held a bed, an overstuffed chair and a cheap television set. He noticed the hooks on the wall near the bank of windows and noticed their mates inserted into the wall above the headboard. Without thinking, he knew that restraints and other devices were in the small closet should he choose to use them. Edward felt the light brush of something on his shoulder and watched as the waif, who wasn’t his Bella, brushed gently past him to kneel at the foot of the bed. Closing the door, he made his way slowly to the chair and sat. Throwing his head back, he closed his eyes and tried to come to grips with what he was doing. ‘Repellent,’ Carlisle growled in his mind, ‘Repulsive, inhumane, savage.’ He could tell her to sleep, tuck her in and listen to her dream all night. He could pretend she was his Bella and protect her. He could hold her and comfort her so that the terrified visions playing inside her mind still. He could be good to her. He could forget the reason he was here and push the cravings, the curiosity, aside. Picking his head up, he looked at her and noticed she was still shivering, the terror in her mind has subsided a little and in its place comes resignation. She was surprised he hadn’t attacked her already; most patrons didn’t usually wait much beyond closing the door. “What’s your name?” He asked, suddenly curious. “We don’t have names,” she whispered. “It’s not allowed.” “Surely you have a name,” he replied and tried to smile while keeping his lips closed, she knew what his teeth were for and it wouldn’t do any good to scare her with them. “Mine is Edward.” “I’ll get in trouble,” she mutters. “I won’t tell them you’ve told me,” he tried again gently. “What’s your name?” “Casey,” the girl replied softly and didn’t let her eyes leave the dingy brown carpet. “That’s pretty,” he tried to sound reassuring. “How old are you Casey?” “I don’t know,” she shook her head despondently. “We don’t celebrate much here.” “It doesn’t matter,” he reached out a hand to her in an attempt to be soothing. She scooted closer, still not looking up at him, so that she was kneeling next to his left foot. “Do you remember how old you were when this happened?” “Fifteen,” she whispered again and he couldn’t help letting his fingers slide through her hair. “It was just after the war started.” ‘The war,’ he thought to himself. He doubted it was the same war he’d been an adolescent through; somehow she seemed younger than he was. “The Great War?” She shook her head then. “Not that war, the next one.” The next one, World War II. She’d been a slave here since World War II. “What’s the last thing you remember Casey?” He found himself asking, even though he shouldn’t care. He shouldn’t want this girl, this creature, to seem real. He shouldn’t want her to feel human. “They didn’t let us go to school because the bombs had hit Hawaii,” she answered. “I was supposed to stay inside but it was just so boring and the man outside, I thought he might have news. He looked like someone official.” Edward felt his stomach twist as he realized what she was recounting. He looked like someone official. She’d been inside the house and all he’d had to do was attract her attention, inflame her curiosity, and she’d gone willingly to where he was. It was what made them such good predators, a skill he’d used himself so many times when he still hunted among men, he’d compelled her outside and to her fate. “I won’t hurt you Casey,” he whispered gently as he reached down to pull her into his lap. She was almost identical in size to his Bella and the memory of the same weight made his breathing labored. She wasn’t his Bella, he reminded himself. His Bella wasn’t broken, her mind was still clear, and her heart beat was still as rapid as a swallow’s wings. His Bella was still a human, still fully alive. This wasn’t Bella; this was a Halfling, a creature made to sustain vampires when they couldn’t hunt, a creature whose full blood capacity could replenish with just a few drops of blood and a faint heartbeat in a matter of hours. She was a pleasure toy, a pet, an object to be bought and sold in their world. Her heartbeat would remain slow, shallow, and while she wouldn’t live forever her life would be prolonged as long as she was fed from and the venom in her system replenished frequently. She would be trapped for the rest of her indefinitely long life inside the body of a 15 year old girl. This wasn’t his Bella, but once upon a time, before this thing had happened to her, she could have been. “I won’t hurt you Casey,” he managed to repeat softly as he settled the girl into his arms. “I promise I don’t want to hurt you.” She nodded slightly and when her head moved he could see the faint silver scarring on her neck. Bites that overlapped bites covered her wrists as well, he noticed. She let her head fall back slightly and he could see the throb of her pulse and the blood pulsing slowly beneath it. Once upon a time she could have been his Bella, but that doesn’t stop him from leaning in and giving her neck a tender bite.
