-Overweight & Obesity Facts-
Background:
61% of adults in the United States are
overweight or obese.
LIKE YOU, I WAS UPSET WITH HOW MY BODY LOOKED
AND TOO LAZY TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.
13% of children aged 6 to 11 years and 14%
of adolescents aged 12 to 19 years are
overweight.
After college I began an 8 to 5 job sitting at a computer. Soon I watched my
weight go up by 30 pounds. At the time, I was not exercising, still eating a
"college" diet, and before I knew it, I was a very unhappy out-of-shape person. I
knew the fad diets were a waste of my time and money, but I was still too lazy to
commit to an exercise program.
300,000 deaths each year in the United
States are associated with obesity.
Overweight and obesity are associated with
heart disease, certain types of cancer, type 2
diabetes, stroke, arthritis, breathing
problems, and psychological disorders, such
as depression.
It took me two years (and a lot of reading and research) until I was ready to
commit to a fitness program. During those two years I saw a lot of people trying
to get in shape, but most were going about it the wrong way. I decided my
approach would be to learn from other's mistakes.
The economic cost of obesity in the United
States is about $117 billion annualy.
Here's how I started: I used to go to the grocery store and watch to see what
people had in their carts. Try it for yourself the next time you are grocery
shopping, look around and see what people are buying. It's easy to spot the
unhealthy foods in people's shopping carts; they are all of the popular, well
known names with bright red and yellow coloring that catch your attention.

Not magic, just dedication
Background continued:
If you want to get in shape, you have to do
the work. A pill will not do the trick. It's not
magic, it's dedication
IT'S EASY TO SPOT THE UNHEALTHY FOODS...
Take a close look at the people who are buying these products. Do they look
healthy? Well, nine times out of ten, they do not. It's not a coincidence that
unhealthy people buy unhealthy food. This statement may seem too simplistic,
but getting in shape and eating healthy is really not all that complicated. We must
make healthy choices when it comes to our diet and lifestyle.
You should tell yourself you are going to do
something athletic everyday.
I'd like to share the two best bits of advice I obtained during my years of
research. While at my family physician's office complaining about my lack of
energy, not being in shape, and just feeling sluggish overall, I asked my doctor to
prescribe Androgel to boost my testosterone levels. I had read an article in TIME
magazine about Androgel, and it seemed like something to help me get in shape
fast. My testosterone levels checked out just fine, so my doctor would not write
the prescription. He looked at me and said, "If you want to get in shape, you
have to do the work. A pill will not do the trick. It's not magic, it's dedication.
You should tell yourself you are going to do something athletic everyday.
Everyday."

Valuable, yet humbling advice
Background continued:
You don't have to change your diet; you have
to change your life.
Whoa! I heard what my doctor said loud and clear, but I didn't want to believe I
had to do something everyday. All sorts of excuses flooded my brain: "I won't
have the time… You've got to be kidding everyday…" This advice, although
painful, is very true. We inevitably have days of exercise we will miss, so it's not
necessary to take a day off. If you were to only work out four days a week, then
you had to take a day off for whatever reason, you would be shortening yourself
to a three day a week workout.
Good health is a lifestyle, not a fad.
Needless to say I was a little embarrassed after visiting my doctor because he saw
my true intentions. I knew he was right, and I left his office that day with some
valuable, yet humbling advice.
Some time later, a co-worker and I were having a conversation about fitness,
exercise and dieting. (My co-worker is 47 and is in great shape. He runs, exercises
and eats well.) Anyhow, I was essentially complaining about my body and telling
him I wanted to get healthy and fit. When I asked him how he stayed in such
great shape, he told me he simply lives his life as a healthy person and has
adopted habits that keep him in shape. He said: You don't have to change your
diet; you have to change your life. "Good health is a lifestyle, not a fad."

-Exercise & Stress-
Background continued:
When you exercise, your brain releases
endorphins (opium-like substances that ease
pain and produce a sense of well-being and
even euphoria). Exercise also encourages
the nerve cells in your brain to secrete other
neurotransmitters. Researchers have found
that when depressed patients exercise they
are able to increase their levels of these
natural antidepressants.
His honesty hit me head on. My co-worker is the type of person who says exactly
what is on his mind, and I respect him for this. Although we were talking about
fitness and exercise in general, it felt like he was giving me personal advice so I it
took to heart. After our conversation, I knew getting in shape was something I
wanted to commit myself to.
Psychology Studies have found that exercise
helps relieve muscle tension and pent-up
emotions such as anger, frustration and fear.
Exercise improves the ability to relax or
sleep. Physical activity also enhances energy,
self-esteem, concentration, memory and
mood. In addition, research suggests that
exercise may prevent or treat mild or
moderate depression and may help minimize
symptoms of anxiety.
With those two bits of advice, I was off and running, lifting weights and eating
better. To be honest, I hated it. It hurt my body when I ran. I was craving fast
food. I couldn't exercise for long, and after a week, my body still looked exactly
the same. I almost gave up, but then I thought about the shape I was in, and how
much I hated how I felt about myself, and decided to give it one more week.
Right around the middle of that next week, I started to feel a change. I began to
enjoy the running because it cleared my head and helped me to "de-stress" and let
go of my daily anxieties. From that day on, I slowly decided to live my life as a
healthy person.
Exercising with a friend or as part of a group
can lift your spirits and improve your outlook
on life. The social interaction and support you
receive also takes your mind off your stress.
